Smiles of success… local medal winners.
Three Dyfed judo teams recently competed in the Welsh County Team Championships at the National Sports Centre in Cardiff. The competition was fierce with each county putting forwards powerful teams.

Dyfed once again put up a tremendous performance despite being under strength in each of the teams performing.

The Dyfed under 18 girl’s team lost their first round contest but made and excellent comeback to narrowly miss a place in the final. The team came home with a well-deserved bronze medal position.

The Dyfed senior men’s team once again proved a strong combination being unbeaten and gaining a place in the final.

In the final they fought a strong West Glamorgan side and narrowly lost. The team won a well deserved silver medal.

Alun Evans, of Carmarthen Judo Club, was called up that morning for his first Dyfed cap. Alun fought well in his first team championships and well deserved to share the silver.

Dyfed’s under 18 years boys team has a very tough contest, fighting with only eight members instead of eleven.

The tem performed exceptionally well reaching the final with a one hundred percent record.

On the way to the final they beat teams from Powys, Gwent and Mid Glamorgan.

In the final they faced a full strength team from West Glamorgan and despite some heroic performances they lost by five wins to four.

Within the team of eight there were three from Carmarthen’s Union Street Judo Club. They were Christopher Whatley, Barry Thomas and Ceri Griffiths.

Other clubs from Dyfed supplying fighters included Llanelli and Neyland.

The teams were managed by Mr J Price and coached by Mr Duncan Kinnear from Llanelli.
