On Sunday Carmarthen Judo Club held a Welsh Judo Association grading for its members at the new facility at the leisure centre, Johnstown. The grading is a test of knowledge of the martial art of judo and is assessed by Welsh Judo Association coaches. The grading was held for 23 members of the Club who believed they were of a standard outlined in the Welsh Judo Association Syllabus. This was a totally new syllabus and it required the persons being tested having knowledge of holds, throws, refereeing calls and translations of all English words into Japanese.

The grading began at 10am with a two hour training session where the students were put through their paces by local Carmarthen coaches Louise Beard and Emyr ap Sion. They then had a half hour break and then their test began with pairs of students being taken to one side of Carmarthen Judo Club's new Dojo (training hall) and tested on their knowledge. It is with pride that the Club can announce that each one of the candidates passed their individual exam with flying colours.

Club coach Louise Beard said "It is difficult for these young people, from the age of eight years, to remember some of these Japanese terms but they showed their determination and ability in demonstrating each technique asked of them. They should be proud of themselves."

Their new grades will be registered by the Welsh Judo Association.
