A member of Carmarthen Judo Club has recently passed a Welsh Judo Association Dragon Award, the presentation of a purple belt. The award is accorded to those young people, under 8 years, who have completed an arduous examination in Japanese. The examination is taken over a number of months and requires each participant to complete a set of throws, referee words and Judo History to a standard laid down by the Welsh Judo Association.

Rhys Griffiths recently undertook the final part of the examination at Carmarthen Judo Club (Carmarthen Leisure Centre) and passed with flying colours. The examination was supervised by a Welsh Judo Association coach who was asking questions and watching Rhys complete the tasks allocated. The difficult part of this examination is that all the terms, throws and referee calls are in Japanese which examinees have to learn.

Louise Beard, club coach, said "Rhys has been a member of the Club for some time and has done well to achieve this award. The younger members of the Club are doing well and many have achieved their purple belt."
