Carmarthenshire's sporting greats have been crowned at a top award ceremony. Ten of the county's finest sportsmen, women and teams have been rewarded for excellence in their fields.

They have celebrated success in the county's fifth annual Sports Personality Awards. Dignitaries and sports enthusiasts from all over the area attended the Carmarthenshire Local Sports Council event at Tumble Hall. Around 300 guests were there to see trophies being handed out.

The Volunteer of the Year award went to Geoff Griffiths for his 14-year involvement with Carmarthen Judo Club. Geoff has been club secretary for 10 years, and religiously attends three times a week. He orders equipment and kit, plays a key role in raising money and securing grants, encourages members to participate and is a huge support to many national and international athletes. He frequently attends weekend competitions and often drives members to venues himself. This year he brought an award to the attention of members allowing one to spend five weeks in Japan.

The club celebrated a second award, with Mark Griffiths being named Sports Coach of the Year. Mark has spent the past five years coaching members of Carmarthen Judo Club. The 24 year-old has trained many gold medallists, Welsh and British champions. This year alone he has coached many children for Dragon Awards as well as GCSE students and he has received a prestigious coaching award from the British and Welsh Judo Associations.

Carmarthenshire Council's Sports and leisure manager Ian Jones said: "It is important that we recognise the achievement of the performers and also the volunteers.

"It was a wonderful event and we congratulate everyone who won, along with everyone who worked so hard making the event a success.

CLSC chairman, county councillor Ryan Jones said: "Carmarthenshire has an excellent reputation in the Welsh sporting circles. It is a pleasure to see that local sporting talent is gaining recognition."
